You might recognize candidate Benning from our shoot a short while back. He's running for congress this June. His family is so great and I was thrilled when they called back for a family portrait session.

Three gorgeous, smart, daughters...

Thought this was so cute...

I know I might sound like a broken record but one of the reasons I love doing engagement sessions is to get to know the couples before their weddings. Joy told me Ryan was shy, and Ryan confirmed that when we meet at the Santa Monica Pier for our shoot. He looked around nervously at all the people so we took off for some quieter corners. But then what does he do for the next hour? Hits all these cool model poses, asks if we can try ideas that he has... we had such a great time! And Joy... all I can saw is WOW! Now I can't wait to shoot their wedding even more! Some of my favs...

How cute are they!

I love when my clients don't even flinch when cold, rushing water starts to engulf them!

Jack Says:
Ok Seriously! I want know how to do that! You have mad photog skills!

There's just something about the way he looks at her...

Something about how at ease they are with each other...

Something about how playful they are...

Something about how serious they are for each other...

Something about Mary and Fernando that I can't get enough of. I'm looking forward to taking some more amazing photos of their wedding this summer...

I just saw a teenage boy choking a girl in front of my house and calling her names that I can't repeat here. It was the yelling that drew me out of my home. It was the rage in his eyes that made me go up to him and yell for him to let her go. It is the after shock of what just happened that has me sitting here typing because I'm not sure how to process this....
The girl wouldn't look at me. She wouldn't get out of the car they were in. The boy threatened me and now I'm concerned he will come back to our home. I'm scarred that when I told him I was calling the police and memorized his license plate number that he memorized my face and my address and that he was just going to drive off to bet her up somewhere else... then maybe come back another time.
Will I come home one day to a trashed house or banged up cars? Is it okay for my daughter to play outside? I don't know... but how do you not stop something like that? And how do you process everything that you just became part of...?
Mary Wayne Says:
I'm sorry you had to witness that. But you did the right thing. I'm sure you and your family will be fine.

I meet with Stephanie and Andrew at a restaurant awhile back to talk about their wedding. There were on their way home to Fresno after scouting out kilts in Santa Monica for the male wedding attire. That was the first sign that I knew I wanted to shoot their wedding. No, actually the second. Stephanie's amazingly cute freckles and Andrews amazing eyes were the first thing. Then the kilts.

Ummmm, yea... sorry... there was a lot of kissing going on...

The clincher, however, was when they told me they met in San Diego while in the Navy. The wheels in my head starting spinning and I'm sure if they had looked closely they would have seen manic excitement in my eyes (and probably a touch of smoke coming out of my ears). I told them about an image I had been wanting to recreate with the right couple. A homage paid to an image I love by Alfred Eisenstaedt with a real sailor, so it would ring true... for them and me. I left that meeting praying they would book me and jumped for joy when they did. And that they were just as excited by my idea!
Fast forward months later and here we are in downtown LA with some of the older architecture surrounding us, doing an interpretation of an iconic image. Thank you Stephanie and Andrew for trusting me and having fun with me during your engagement session. Can't wait for your San Diego wedding next month!

Okay, here is reason number one... eyes...freckles...need I say more?
