Lily's Bat Mitzvah, was so full of life, love and energy. This family is so fabulous, I feel fortunate they thought of me when it came time to photographing Lily's big day. The whole event was held at Maggiano's which gave a warm backdrop to the festivities.

The DJ's, from Get in the Groove, had the dance floor packed all day. Video by Bella Video Productions.

When I am retained to shoot a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, part of what I do are portrait sessions. These are usually used for a sign in board or, my favorite, a guest sign in book. But what I really love, is getting to know these kids before their big day. It gives us a chance to get to know each other and bond a bit so they are comfortable with me when their event arrives. I don't do formal portrait sittings. I want the kids to be truly who they are so we do great, fun, lifestyle sessions.

I loved working with Jacob and his family; I got to bond with the whole family! They had so much fun together and Jacob is so handsome! Love the shots we got of him doing the things he is passionate about. I'm looking froward to his March Bar Mitzvah.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the Bar Mitzvah of a friend of mine who I went to high school with. That would normally make me feel old but I seem to be doing a lot of these lately and it just makes me feel like I live in a smaller town then I really do. I guess that's what happens when you don't move away from where you grew up!

I also loved that Congregation Or Ami allows photographers to shoot during the ceremony, which is such a bonus for the parents as I can give them a larger variety of photos for their albums. Images that really tell the story of the whole event.

After the morning service, we headed over to the Woodland Hills Maggiano's for a luncheon and some fun on the dance floor. Jodi designed Jack's invitations herself and I loved the vintagy theme. Music by The Party Zone.

It's so great taking photos with a family of actors. Every time my camera clicked everyone struck another pose. The only thing better would be shooting Tyra Banks herself!

Lily's Bat Mitzvah is coming up soon so we got together recently to get some portraits done of her and her family, minus big sis, plus one dog, who was not pleased with the attention at all.

We did a series of funny shots that Lily's mom has an idea for. Can't wait to see what she does with them.

By the way, you need to check out mom Kelly's business, Easy Lunch Boxes, for some awesome earth friendly lunch boxes!
Kelly Lester Says:
Karen - You captured us perfectly! We love these portraits because they're alive and not 'posed' (and we look so good!). So excited to be working with you and your amazing talents. Can't wait for the big day! Many thanks from all of us :)

After our fun beach portrait session, I knew Jeffrey would be great to shoot during his Bar Mitzvah at the Westlake Village Inn. It was a beautiful morning and the outdoor ceremony was on a great Italian looking terrace. Jeffrey did such a great job and deserved every minute of his celebration.

Jeffrey's mom did a great job with the centerpieces and other design elements...

Jeffrey and his family love to travel and Tahiti is close to their hearts. Pati from Guilty Temptations did a great job creating these tropical hut cakes over "water and sand".
